Check the sand surface for caking

Check before you act. This one is driven by what you measure, not by the date. Check the top of the sand bed for crusting or caking remove about an inch of media if the surface has hardened

The failure nothing warns you about Sand does not wear out so much as it channels. Oils and minerals bind the top layer into a crust, water finds a path through it, and the filter quietly stops filtering while the gauge still looks normal. ## What to do 1. Stop the pump and release the pressure. 2. Open the top of the tank and look at the surface of the sand. 3. It should be loose and level. Crusting, caking, or a hard top layer is the problem. Hayward's own troubleshooting for short filter cycles is direct about the fix: remove about an inch of sand if it has crusted.
