Close the pool for winter
The part that cracks tanks Water left in a sand filter over a freeze will split the tank. Hayward's winterising instruction is specific: 1. Backwash and rinse a final time. 2. Remove the drain cap from the bottom of the tank and let it drain completely. 3. Leave the drain cap off for the winter. Store it somewhere you will find it — taping it to the tank works. 4. Set the multiport valve between two settings, in the inactive position, so the valve is not held under load all winter. ## The rest of the system Drain the pump, and drain the heater if you have one. Blow out the lines and plug the returns. Store the pressure gauge indoors if it unscrews easily — they are a common freeze casualty.
